Project: Evil - The Christmas Party part 3

‘I’m off to shoot the runner up on the Elimination Karaoke, shoot the DJ once he’s finished playing all my requests, shoot the tribute band once they’ve finished their set and shoot the airship captain once he’s finished his drinking.
‘That’s unreasonable,’ said Daw, checking the company position on shooting contractors, but finding that it was actually considered reasonable, even mandatory.  ‘By all accounts he’ll have dropped us off and be halfway home before he stops drinking.’  O’Feld shrugged, at least it freed up his diary a little.

A distraught looking engineer joined them, his shirt open at the neck, his tie trailing low on his shirt, a pencil lodged firmly behind his ear.

‘They’ve added a four by two metre stainless steel table inside the rocket,’ he said. Brian shrugged as best he could in a bullet proof tuxedo.

‘Sorry about that, the workshop manager fitted it to facilitate site meetings before NoDangerStyleUK fitted the windows. Then he found he couldn’t get it out, something about the windows having an anti-jumping restraint on the hinges,’ he said. The engineer turned purple and started waving sheaves of paper showing complicated calculations on it.

‘This is a four stage rocket with motors designed for three, carrying four henchpersons and fifty thousand armadillo droppings instead of a box of experimental mice. And now you introduce an additional stainless steel table four hours before we ship to the South Seas. Have you any idea what this does to my calculations?’ he asked. Brian scanned the calculations carefully.

‘So, you need to get another pot of beige paint?’ he said, handing the engineer the paper bundle back.
‘What do you think?  We can't let an unpainted stainless steel table blast off into space.  To cap it all, B & Q are shut until the morning,’ ranted the engineer, storming back to the party.

‘Will engineer blood do as a substitute?’ asked O’Feld.
Two hours later found the senior team sat amid a pile of slaughtered henchmen. Not drunk, just slaughtered.  Daw sighed, he had less than an hour to recruit, train and deploy fifty replacements, it was past midnight and he was pissed; but it was the raffle prize to thank for that.  It was O’Feld’s raffle prize to thank for the slaughtered henchmen, actually, as well.  As Christmas parties went, it was a pretty good result.  O’Feld blew the smoke emanating from the barrel of the machine gun he’d won in the raffle, looking really pleased.
‘Right,’ he said, looking at his watch, ‘what’s the order of play?’  Brian looked at the list he’d prepared, then at the machine gun.  He hoped O’Feld still had some bullets left, he’d rather hoped that O’Feld would have waited for the Secret Santa, which of course was why he’d arranged for it to be first prize. He looked around the group.  Froshdu was still there, not because of the Secret Santa – he’d only be interested in that if the fat fella in the red suit was being spit roasted and served in pitta bread.  He was still there because he’d found the stash of food Brian had hidden, the food the Head of Catering had supplied.  The Head of Catering was also there, eying the parcel in front of him cautiously, and reasonably given that he’d found out that Brian had supplied it.  O’Feld was there, of course, impatiently fiddling with the paper wrapping provided by the EVIL Officer and Daw sat next to him, nervously.  Daw was always nervous when he was sat next to O’Feld and O’Feld was opening a parcel – if it didn’t explode, then usually O’Feld did.  Finally, his face a picture of enthusiasm, sat the EVIL Officer.  Daw decided to open his parcel first.
‘Oh, it’s a dice,’ he said, holding the cube up.
‘Strictly, a die,’ corrected O’Feld. ‘I thought that was appropriate,’ he gloated.  Daw examined the die, read the six faces in turn.
‘Kill, Maim, Kill, Maim, Kill, Maim and Kill,’ he read.  ‘I really could have done with this last week when recruiting for the Charity Liaison Officer post, bloody do-gooders,’ he said, slipping the die into his pocket.  Froshdu picked his parcel up and ate it without removing the wrapping.  Daw’s jaw dropped; when he’d bought the leather shoes he really thought Froshdu would like them.  On his feet, not in his stomach.
‘A bit chewy,’ grumbled Froshdu, burping, ‘but very tasty.  Loafers?’ he asked.  Daw nodded, it had seemed an appropriate name for a present for Froshdu.  The EVIL Officer opened his parcel gingerly, trying to work out who had bought it for him.  So was Brian.
‘A kilo of raw beef?’ he said as he held the dripping meat in front of him.  ‘I don’t eat raw meat,’ he said, looking suddenly at the Head of Catering.  Before he could react, Froshdu grabbed the meat and tucked in.
‘That’s what I was hoping,’ he said, biting off a sizable chunk.  Brian did a quick head count and realised that he and the Head of Catering had bought each other presents.  Both men set their parcels aside, both hoping theirs wasn’t on a time switch.
‘Can I open mine now?’ asked an excited O’Feld.
‘Sure,’ answered Brian, adding, ‘would you like me to hold your machine gun for you?’  O’Feld pulled at the wrapping paper excitedly while Brian ensured there was a fresh round in the breach.  He’d taken the liberty of writing the EVIL Officer’s name on the bullet.  He really hoped the prat had taken his advice, and when O’Feld held the book up, he knew he had.
‘The wisdom of Doktor Negatif?’ asked O’Feld, turning the book around and reaching for the machine gun.  The EVIL Officer obviously hadn’t picked up on O’Feld’s anger as he nodded enthusiastically.
‘Look inside,’ he said, reaching over.  O’Feld glowered as the man pulled the book open, revealing two hundred and twenty blank pages save for the first page, which had a signature in it.
‘No wisdom, and I even got him to sign it,’ said the EVIL Officer, leaning back.  O’Feld roared at the joke.
‘Brian, put that in the library in the secret island lair,’ he said, passing the book to Brian.
‘Library?  What library?’ he asked, only to be greeted with the look he’d expected the EVIL Officer to have received.  There was only one room that he could convert at short notice to a library.  It looked like he was joining the other managers in podworld.

Project: Evil - Design Freeze Meeting part 2

Brian wasn’t finished, though.  ‘Additionally, because NoDangerStyle UK feel they’ve let us down a little regarding the antimatter they’ve agreed to provide the glazing for the rocket itself at a BOGOF rate, as long as we change the rocket window design to the dimensions of a standard semi-detached in Wimbledon.’  O’Feld looked impressed; however Daw wasn’t as keen on the deal.
‘There’s such a thing as a standard semi-detached in Wimbledon?’ he queried.  Brian shrugged; he’d asked the same question.
‘It’s a very specific standard semi, one which has just reneged on a deal after the windows have been manufactured,’ he explained, adding, ‘but although the cost of redesigning the rocket has increased by four million pounds to accommodate the windows, they are only going to cost us eighty five pounds total and then there’s the three point two million cost of the rocket standard glazing that we no longer need, so the budget seems to be doing OK out of this,’ he said, hoping Daw wasn’t counting.  The Head of Finance scribbled some figures down and gave O’Feld a nod in agreement.
‘Continue,’ said O’Feld.  Before Brian could open his mouth, Daw had his finger in the air again.
‘If we haven’t got the antimatter for the Super Heated Antimatter Gun, why are we sending a rocket into space?’ he asked.  Brian took a slug of water, hoping it was the only slug he’d take that day.
‘Well, me and the team,’ he said, waving an arm expansively across the technical members, none of whom seemed ready to acknowledge membership at this point.
‘Your TWATs?’ asked O’Feld.  Brian nodded.
‘We truly are a team here, so I don’t like to think of them as “my” TWATs,’ he said, stalling for time while waiting for inspiration, ‘I like to think that I’m a bit of a TWAT, too, and proud of it,’ he said.  If he’d hoped the other TWATs in the meeting would swing around and support him, it wasn’t happening at this point.
‘We’ve got three options,’ said Brian.  ‘First, we could forget using a space borne weapon,’ he said.  O’Feld turned beetroot red.
‘Then why would we build a launch pad and a mission control?’ he asked, adding, ‘that doesn’t make any sense; the rocket’s non-negotiable,’ he said, sitting down again.  Brian gulped and continued.
‘We could ditch the acronym and invent a new one,’ he suggested.  O’Feld considered this briefly.
‘Such as?’ he asked.
‘Space Aligned Laser Targetter,’ suggested Brian, forgetting what planet threatening event this posed.
‘SALT?’ exclaimed O’Feld, ‘Which TWAT thought of that?’ he asked.
‘Strictly it wasn’t a TWAT,’ answered Brian, inwardly thinking that actually, it was.  ‘It was the Head of Catering’s suggestion,’ he said.  O’Feld glowered at the Chief Cook before turning back to Brian.
‘No, I’m vetoing the change of acronym idea as well.  We’ll have a rocket, a launch pad, a pointless mock volcano and a SHAG; end of chat.  I hope that was your third option?’ he said, absently stroking a pistol he’d found stuffed down his sock.  Brian wasn’t certain, but he thought that the pistol had been slipped in there by the Head of Catering.
‘Well, obviously, that was indeed my third option and as I’m sure you know, we always present the no-hoper ideas first in these meetings,’ answered Brian, sweating, trying to remember what O’Feld did when he wanted to provide options.  Then he remembered he was working for an autocratic Megalomaniac who never presented options.  Unless die standing or running counted as an option.
‘So, we can’t have a Super Heated Antimatter Gun.  What can we have?’ asked O’Feld, examining the pistol, finding out that it had dum-dum bullets loaded.
‘Well,’ said Brian, looking at one of his engineers, ‘Alec did have a suggestion,’ he said, watching Alec shake his head vigorously.  O’Feld fixed his stare at the engineer.
‘Come on, man, what have you got?’  The engineer gulped as he flicked pointlessly through his project pad.
‘It wasn’t a serious suggestion,’ he volunteered, noting that the pistol had been closed and the cocking lever pulled back.  ‘It was just a play on words,’ he said, sweating.
‘Go on,’ said O’Feld, entirely focused on the engineer who, suddenly, found the seats around him had been vacated.
‘Space Hopping Armadillo Gonads,’ said Alec.

Reading This Blog Could Cause a Security Crisis!

Unlike many people I'm not paranoid about Government Agencies snooping around my on-line life.  I suppose my twenty four years carrying an RAF ID card and complying with the security strictures of the Ministry of Defence have inured me to the concerns about individual privacy that many harbour.

This article by the Daily Mail, a UK newspaper, highlights - or for those of us who have known about this for some time, reminds - us that anything we post on-line, even (especially) in blogs but also in Social media such as Twitter and Facebook can be monitored by agencies such as GCHQ in Cheltenham, UK or various agencies in the US including Homeland Security.  Such is the level of traffic floating around the web now they have to resort to sophisticated routines that look for specific words or phrases that may have sinister meanings.  Such as Bomb, Terror, Rupert Murdoch - you get the idea.

It's been going on a long time, probably since the dawn of the public Internet, and I'm personally not concerned - but then again I'm always pleased to add more readers to my blog, so perhaps my viewpoint is skewed!  I don't know what I find more surprising - the article being posted at the end of 2011 or the comments made in reply.

I guess some of the chapters in Da Dan Brown Code might have rung the odd alarm in one of these agencies - from recollection I've mentioned the Patriot Act, GCHQ and I'm sure there were a few other references in Da Dan Brown Code that might have caused someone to take a brief second look.  But as I sit here on a very windy afternoon preparing Project: Evil for serialisation I realise that the bells are going to be ringing a lot more frequently and louder than ever.  For all I know, the various agencies may have the technology to monitor those who read my blog, so I'm giving both of you fair warning!

Over the next few months, three times a week, I'm going to be making regular references to Weapons of Mass Destruction, Evil Organisations, Megalomaniacs, Torture, Murder, David Cameron, Secret Missile Bases, Henchmen and Safestyle UK.  If that lot doesn't get the GCHQ alarms ringing, nothing will.  If that list has hit an intelligence analyst's desk then can I make a couple of suggestions - first, bookmark the blog and flag it as mostly harmless - there are way more dangerous bloggers out there than me - and secondly, sign up to the blog - that way you can read my attempt to rip your industry apart three times a week, starting 8 January 2012.

Now where did I bury that neutron bomb I stole from the RAF before I left?
